Matthias Fletzberger

From piano prodigy to classical pianist and conductor in opera and concert: Matthias Fletzberger proves to be time and again a versatile and exciting musical personality. The different influences have had a great impact on his deep understanding of music and its varied interpretation.

Born in Vienna his outstanding musical talent of the was discovered at the early age of 5, when he was accepted as a student of the University of Music in Vienna. Aged 12 he won the first prize at the Youth Competition “Jugend musiziert”. Still a student in the concert class of Hans Graf he won top prizes at international piano competitions, including the “Busoni” (Bolzano 1984 - Silver Medal), “Rubinstein” (Tel Aviv 1986 - Gold Medal), and “Bösendorfer” (Vienna 1988 - First Prize) competitions.

As a result, his career took him to all continents: as recitalist, as soloist with major orchestras (Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Bordeaux, Orquestra National d’Espagna, etc.), collaborating with conductors like Jesus Lopez Cobos, Ferdinand Leitner, Carl Melles and as chamber music pianist and accompanist of renowned singers.

On advice of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Rolf Liebermann and trained and promoted by Ferdinand Leitner and Carl Melles he started a second career as a conductor. Rolf Lieberman also engaged him as assistant conductor at Salzburg Mozarteum (“Le nozze di Figaro”, directed by Peter Ustinov; Conductor: Gary Bertini).

He was co-founder of the independent opera-scene in Vienna and appointed first artistic director of Jugendstil-Theatre. His own production of Pergolesi’s “La Serva Padrona” was awarded by the Viennese Newspaper “Die Presse” as one of five “Operas of the Year 1991”. Consequently he worked as a conductor (among others) at Prague State Opera and the Vienna Festival (“The Magic Flute“ 1991, “La belle Hélene” 1993); these two productions were recorded by the Austrian Television (ORF) and broadcasted via Eurovision.

In 1995 John Neschling invited him to the Theater St. Gallen (Switzerland) as assistant conductor and assistant to the opera-director. Since the year 1999 he was working as  a freelance conductor with orchestras like Vienna Chamber Symphony, Orchestra of Bratislava Opera, Prague State-Opera or the State Symphony Orchestra Tbilisi.

Since 2008 he is performing together with renowned austrian-russian Violinist Lidia Baich. In 2011 by Deutsche Grammophon presented the CD/DVD “Violin in Motion” recorded together with Lidia Baich.

Highly appreciated is also his work with singers like Daniela Fally, Elina Garanca, Benjamin Bruns, Thomas Hampson, Andreas Schager, or Ramon Vargas in concert and opera.  As a conductor he has recently been working with orchestras like Ambassade Orchester Vienna, Latvian National Symphony, Mongolian State Philharmonic, Strauss Symphony of America, Vancouver Symphony and Ottawa Symphony Orchestra.

At the turn of 2015/16 Matthias Fletzberger was invited to conduct the New Year’s concerts in New York (Lincoln Centre), Washington and Philadelphia. The coming seasons includes engagements in Austria and Germany as well in Toronto, Miami, Shanghai and Tokyo (Spring festival).
